Question
What is the method of completing the 4 rakaat salaat behind the imaam if you only got the qaada akhira with the imaam. How do you complete the salaat after the imaam makes salaam?
Answer
Muhtaram / Muhtaramah
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.
If a person joined the Salāh when the Imām was in Qadah-Akhīrah, after the Imām makes Salām he will stand up, read Thanā, Ta’awwuz and perform the four missed Rakāts as he would perform a normal four Rakāt Salāh (i.e. he should recite Surah Fāthiha and another Surah in the first two Rakāts, sit for Tashah-hud after two Rakāts, recite only Surah Fāthiha in the third and forth Rakāt and sit for Qadah-Akhīrah after the forth Rakāt).
Since he did not join the Imām before or whilst in Ruku, even though he joined the Salāh, he did not get the Rakāt. Therefore, when he stands up after the Imām makes Salām, it will be as if he is performing his first Rakāt.
