Q3-Is it permissible for children to play with animated dolls?

Answer

Muhtaram / Muhtaramah

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.

1. Tahreem – Honour, forbiddance, prohibition (Arabic)

2. Safoora – Empty, void (Arabic)

3. Neelam – Public sale, auction (Urdu)

4. Rayla – Flood, torrent (Urdu)

5. Zayna – It is supposed to be Zeena – beauty, embellishment (Arabic)

6. Zareen – Golden (Urdu)

Technically, it will be permissible to keep any of the above mentioned names. However, one should keep such a name for the child that has a good meaning which will assist in shaping his / her character, spirituality and morals. The name of a person has a great effect upon his / her behaviour.

In regards to your question of keeping hamsters as pets, we did not come across any specific passage referring to its prohibition. However, one should bear in mind that animals also have rights similar to humans. If a person undertakes to keep any animal as a pet, he will be questioned and accountable for its treatment in the hereafter. There is one incident mentioned in the books of Ahadith regarding a woman who kept a cat as a pet. She did not feed it properly nor did she allow it to hunt for its own food. Due to this, she became a dweller of Jahannum. (Muslim # 2242, Ihya al-Turath al-Arabi)

Considering the fact that we live in such an era wherein people hardly fulfil the rights of Allah, their parents and fellow humans, it is highly unlikely that people will fulfil the rights of these animals. For this reason, it will be unadvisable to keep such pets as there is so little derived benefit coupled with such a great responsibility.

It is not permissible to play with dolls or figurines of animate beings.

(Fatawa Mahmoodiya, vol. 19 pg. 503, Jamiya Farooqiya)

If the heads of such dolls or figurines are removed, it will be permissible.

And Allah knows best
