Question
In Malfuzat Maulana Ilyas, he mentioned that when there is no mu’amalah we must practice Husnu Zann. But if there is mu’amalah the command is
“ al-huzmu su’u az-zan”. Please your kindness elaborate the meaning of mua’amalah here, is this meaning the business transaction or everything regarding ‘amal of man for example munakahat, works, hudud etc. Secondly please elaborate the meaning of the hadith in Malfuzat of Maulana Ilyas above (“ al-huzmu su’u az-zan”)
Answer
Muhtaram / Muhtaramah
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.
The statement of Hadhrat Moulana Ilias (R.A) which you have quoted effectively means that in our social lives, we should deal with one another like brothers. We should endeavor to assist one another to the best of our ability. We should also overlook and forgive the shortcomings of our fellow beings and interpret every action of theirs in the best possible way. In this way our hearts will remain pure and free from rancor and jealousy and this will ultimately result in us having husn dhann for each other. However, when it comes to monetary affairs and business dealings, we should resolve and elucidate these matters like total strangers. Just as two strangers would clarify the minutest details and leave no ambiguity whatsoever, we should also deal in the very same way. Its not that we don’t trust our fellow Muslim brothers, it is just so that the doors for many future disputes and problems can be completely closed. The meaning of this statement is alluded to in the following English proverb ‘Live like brothers, deal like strangers’.
And Allah knows best
