Title
We are expecting our first child in a couple of months
Question
We are expecting our first child in a couple of months, inshallah. I hope you can help me with this question.
My question regards to the naming of the child, my wife has discovered the name Ziya (or Zia) and wants it to be the name of the child should it be a girl. She has found the name listed on various websites stating that it is an arabic name for girls. I am having trouble researching this name, I have not found any evidence which supports the notion that Ziya is a name which is appropriate for girls.
She has become attached to the name, convinced that it is appropriate.
Could you offer any help or advice to me?
Answer
Muhtaram / Muhtaramah
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.
The name “Ziya”, or “Dhiya” as written in Arabic (ضياء), means a brightness, light, or illumination. It is permissible to keep this name for a female.
