Title

I have named my son Mikal meaning Archangel of mercy who is responsible of bringing rain

Question

I have named my son Mikal meaning Archangel of mercy who is responsible of bringing rain and thunder to Earth. He is also responsible for the rewards doled out to good persons in this life. The reason I chose this was because I was told this is the islamic/arabic way of saying it. Mikha’il is the jewish was and Michael is the christian way. Is this true and is this a good name for my son? Is it ok to name my son after an angel? And does Mikal mean what I think it does?

Answer

Muhtaram / Muhtaramah

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.

The name Mikal is an Islamic name and an appropriate name to keep. Mikal (or Mika’il) is the name of the Angel who is in charge of rain and crops. The name Mikal is mentioned in the Qur’an in the chapter of Al-Baqarah (The Cow):

مَنْ كَانَ عَدُوًّا لِلَّهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَجِبْرِيلَ وَمِيكَالَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَدُوٌّ لِلْكَافِرِينَ – البقرة

If someone is an enemy to Allah, His angels, and His messengers, and to Jibra’il (Gabriel) and Mika’il (Michael), then Allah is enemy to the disbelievers.

The meaning of the name is equivalent to ‘Abdullah or ‘Ubaydullah. The word was originally non-Arabic, but due to it being used in the Qu’ran, it is considered to be part of the Arabic language. The word Mikal can also be pronounced as Mika’il in Arabic; to assume it to be the Jewish manner of pronouncing it is incorrect.

Ruh al-Ma’ani
