Question
What is the logic in Mehr(Dowry) which is given to women when getting married?
Answer
Muhtaram / Muhtaramah
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.
Allah Ta’ala says in the Holy Quran:
وآتوا النساء صدقاتهن نحلة
“Give women their dower (mehr) with a good heart”. (4:4)
أحل لكم ما وراء ذلكم أن تبتغوا بأموالكم محصنين غير مسافحين فما استمتعتم به منهن فآتوهن أجورهن فريضة
“All (women), except these (that are prohibited in marriage), have been permitted for you to seek (to marry) through your wealth, binding yourself (in marriage), and not only for lust. So, to those of them whose company you have enjoyed, give their dues (dower) as obligated”. (4:24)
As Muslims, it is our duty to adhere and submit to the commandments of Allah Ta’ala, regardless of our understanding the hikmah (wisdom) of the laws of Allah Ta’ala. It suffices for us that Allah Ta’ala is Al-Hakim (The Wise). Every order of His is indeed filled with hikmah.
One hikmah behind giving the mehr is that it demonstrates the seriousness and importance of the marriage contract, and is a token of respect and honour to the woman.
And Allah knows best
