Question
I took a job as a contractor and got a certain amount of money per job, however one stipulation was to work 8 hours on each job. Many times I would finish the job a little bit early and just go home. I’m sure my boss was aware of this, but he never said anything about it or the quality of my work. However, I am concerned now that perhaps some of my earnings would not be halal due to me not following that part of my contract. Is this true? How to I rid myself of haram money if there is any?
Answer
Muhtaram / Muhtaramah
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.
In principle, you should adhere to the terms of your contract. If it was required of you to be at work till a particular time, you should fulfill that. If you left ahead of time, that is wrong. Discuss your concern with your manager and if he forgives you, your income will be halal. However, resolve never to repeat that in the future.
