Title

I wanted to know if my parents are zakat eligible

Question

I wanted to know if my parents are zakat eligible.  They have a shared account where the amount is below the nisab amount.  My mom has some jewelry, but she is going to give it to my sister once she gets married.

My brother, who lives with them, and I support them financially.  Would it be permissible for my wife (who makes her own money) to give her zakat to my parents?  Is there a limit on how much of her zakat she can give to them?

Answer

Muhtaram / Muhtaramah

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.

If your mother has not given the jewellery to your sister as yet and it values to the Nisaab amount, It will not be permissible for your mother to receive Zakaat monies, instead she will have to pay Zakaat.

It is permissible for your wife to give her Zakaat monies to your parents on condition they are valid recipients of Zakaat.

It is Makrooh to give a person such an amount which equals more than the Nisaab amount after his debts are settled.
