Title
what is the origin of sending the short form of salat on Prophet(Saw)
Question
I want to ask that what is the origin of sending the short form of salat on Prophet(Saw) , which is Sallahu Alaihi wasallam. Because all those salawats which were taught by Prophet(Saw) included salawat on AAL e Muhammad(Saw). So what is the origin of saying Sallahu alaihi wasallam? Who started it? Was this shorter form taught by prophet(Saw) or Companions of Prophet(Saw) or it was started by scholars? If it was started by Prophet(Saw) or sahaba(ra) then please quote that narration. |
Answer
Muhtaram / Muhtaramah
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.
Allah Ta’ala mentions in the Holy Qurān,
يا أيها الذين آمنوا صلوا عليه وسلموا تسليما
“O you who believe! Send Salaat and Salaam upon him (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam).”(Qurān 33:56)
In this verse of the holy Qurān we are commanded to send Salaat and Saalaam upon the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam). The short form of Salaat “Sallallahu alaihi wasallam” referred to in your query in actual fact is a combination of both i.e. Salaat and Salaam, and not Salaat alone.
In numerous verses of the Holy Qurān we are commanded to make Dua, however, we are not restricted to make only those Duas which are mentioned in the Qurān or in the Hādeeth. Similarly, we are not restricted to send Salaat and Salaam upon the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) in the exact manner as it has been mentioned in the Hadeeth. The Ulamā have permitted using other forms of sending Salaat and Salaam upon the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam).
(القول البديع, ص154, دار اليسر)
When the Prophet’s (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) name is taken, it will be permissible to say “Sallallahu alaihi wasallam”. It will also be permissible to add “Aal-e-Muhammad”. Being unaware of who initiated this form of Salaat and Salaam will not affect its permissibility.
And Allah knows best
