Answer

Muhtaram / Muhtaramah

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.

1.      It is mustahab for a person who is not in need of having a fardh bath to have a ghusl at the time of accepting Islam. [Raddul Muhtaar v 1, p 170 HM Saeed]. To enter into the fold of Islam the Shahaadah has to be read together with understanding and believing in its purport. Mere recitation of the Shahaadah without understanding and accepting its meaning to be true will not be regarded as Islam.

The fundamental beliefs and practises of Islam should be explained to the lady at the outset. She should also be encouraged to start studying Islam, Tahaarah, Salaah etc. Arrangements could be made with a lady who is well versed in Islam to tutor this lady on the basics of Islam.

2.      A non-Muslim cannot act as a Wali in the marriage of his Muslim daughter. [Raddul Muhtaar v 3, p 77 HM Saeed]. We learn from the Hadith that Nikaah should be conducted in the Masjid (preferably) [Raddul Muhtaar v 3, p 9 HM Saeed]. To facilitate this, the lady should appoint a baaligh Muslim male to be her wakeel/ representative for making the offer for Nikaah to the bride-groom. It is preferable that she appoints her wakeel in the presence of two witnesses. [Raddul Muhtaar v 3, p 31 HM Saeed]
