It was upon his instruction to his son, Mawlana Mahmood Madni Desai (hafizahullah), that the Institute started on 18th January 1994 with one teacher and one student. With the generous assistance of Hajee Mohammed Essack of Camperdown and his family, the Institute began at his premises with one bedroom, classroom and a dining hall.
Within the first academic year, the number of students increased and the facilities were burdened. The steady increase of students had then created a demand for a bigger premises and facilities. With the grace of Almighty Allah Ta’ala, a house with approximately nine bedrooms on a six acre land was available in Camperdown. The Institute purchased the property and is currently located on this premises.
The name of the Institute is Madrsah In’aamiyyah and is named after Mawlana In’aamul Hassan Kandelwi (rahimahullah). The foundation of the Institute was laid with the blessed hands of Shaykhul Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Zakariyya Khandelwi (rahimahullah).
Aims and Objectives
The aim of our Institute is to empower the Muslim Ummah with authentic Islamic education and ethic as taught to us by Rasulullah (sallallaahu ‘alayhi was sallam) and our Akaabir (pious predecessors).
Education
The education wing of the Institute is over seen by our Nizaamut Ta’leem (Education Department) which monitors the education on a daily basis.
The Institute offers the following five courses:
· Hifz(Memorization of the Holy Quraan):
Students are educated in memorizing the Holy Quraan and reciting it with Tajweed.
· Alim Faadhil (6 years):
An intensive course that entails the studying of a host of subjects from the classical and traditional books of the ‘ulama. Some of these subjects are: Aqeedah, Tafseer, Hadith, Fiqh, Lughah, Tareekh etc.
· Qiraa’ah (over three years):
A course specializing in the seven and ten different modes of recitation of the Holy Quran.
· Takhassus Fil Iftaa (over two years):
Post graduate course specializing in the field of Fiqh and issuing of Fatwa.
· Takhassus Fil Hadith (over two years):
Post graduate course specializing in the field of Hadith.
Lessons
All lessons are tutored via the medium of the English language, as it is a universal language that facilitates for students from diverse backgrounds.
Departments
Apart from education, the Institute has set up various departments to serve the needs of the Muslim Ummah. The Institute has the following departments:
- Darul Iftaa (Department of Jurisprudence)
This department is responsible for assisting people with regards to their day to day queries regarding issues of Shariah. Questions are submitted via email at daruliftaa@alinaam.co.za, fax and telephone.
- Darul Nashri wa Ta’leef (Department of Print and Publication)
This department is responsible for the publication of new books as well as translating books into the English language. It also authors the magazine named ‘Al Inaam’.
Our publication department has its own bookshop which sells Islamic literature to the public. It also arranges for free distribution of books to disadvantaged communities.
- Maktabah wa Tahqeeq (Library and Research Centre)
This department takes care of our well resourced library as well as researches specific topics. This department has published various researches and articles on various aspects of Deen which are avalible on our website www.alinaam.co.za.
Students
With the grace of Almighty Allah Ta’ala, we currently have local and foreign students. Foreign students are steadily increasing. Students hail from countries such as Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Burundi, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Germany, Mauritius and Reunion Islands, India, UAE and Pakistan etc.
Tarbiyyah / Tazkiyah
The Institute strongly advocates the need for Tarbiyyah/Tazkiyah and instilling sound morals and ethics in its students. For this reason, the Institute daily conducts the following programs:
· After Fajr Salaat:
Morning Wazaa’if and Majlis of zikr
· After Asr Salaat:
– Majlis on the ethics of seeking Islamic Knowledge and relevant issues
– Mushwara for Da’wah effort
· After Maghrib Salaat:
Evening Wazaa’if and recitation of the Holy Quran
· After Esha Salaat:
Ta’leem of Hayaatus Sahaba (Stories from the lives of the Sahabah)
· Thursday nights:
Recitation of forty durood
· Saturday mornings:
The Institute hosts a student’s program called the ‘anjuman’. Students are chosen to render the recitation of the Holy Quran, deliver lectures etc.
· Weekends:
Students are encouraged to go to neighbouring towns and localities with the purpose of da’wah and imparting the deen to the Muslims.
Daily Schedule
Lessons are conducted six days a week, from Monday to Saturday. No lessons are conducted on Sunday. Hereunder are the estimated timings, which differ from season to season.

4:45am – 5:15am: Fajr Salaat, Morning Wazaa’if and Majlis of zikr
5:15am – 6:00am: Lessons for students of Hifzul Quraan only
6:00am – 7:00am: Breakfast
7:00am – 9:00am: Lessons for all students
9:00am – 9:15am: Break
9:15am – 11:15am: Lessons for all students
11:15am –2:15pm: Lunch and Siesta (midday sleep)
2:15pm – 2:45pm: Zuhr Salaat
2:45pm – 5:00pm: Lessons for all students
5:00pm – 5:30pm: Asr Salaat, Majlis, Mushwara for Da’wah
5:30pm – 6:45pm: Break, Supper
6:45pm – 7:15pm: Maghrib Salaat, Evening Wazaa’if, Recitation of Quraan
7:15pm – 8:45pm: Revision of entire day lessons and preparation for next day
8:45pm – 9:30pm: Esha Salaat, Recitation of Hayaatus Sahabah
9:30pm – 4:45am: Free time
· Saturday
7:00am – 8:00am: Anjuman (students program)
8:00am – 12:00pm: Lessons
12:00pm – Sunday Maghrib: Free time
Facilities
The Institute provides the following facilities:
· Library
The Institute has a well resourced library in order to facilitate researches and to see to the academic needs of its students.
· Islamic Bookshop
The Institute provides an Islamic bookshop whereby students as well as the general public may obtain their Islamic literature.
· Boarding
The Institute provides boarding facilities to its students and ensures their well being. The boarding rooms are checked and monitored on a daily basis.
· Laundry
The Institute provides a free laundry service to its students, which is undertaken by the caretakers of the Institute.
· Dining Hall
The Institute provides a free variety of meals to its students in the dining hall.
· Canteen(Tuck Shop)
It provides the necessary items required by the students.
Activities
The Institute provides various recreational activities, all of which are on site.
Shuraa
The Institute has a board of senior ulama of South Africa with whom it refers to for advice.
