Question
I have been informed that there is a differance between Mahr Fatimi and the Mahr which Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave his noble consorts. Is this true? If it is, how much exactly is each one in gold/silver and rands?
Answer
Muhtaram / Muhtaramah
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.
It is Sunnat to give Mahr which Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam gave to most of the azwaaj-e-mutahharaat, which is 500 dirhams. [Muslim] This is equivalent to 1530.9 g of silver, the value of it differs according to the times. It is mentioned that only Umm Habibah Radiyallahu Anha received a greater Mahr as Negus, the king of Abyssinia, paid 4000 dirhams as mahr on behalf of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam.
The amount of Mahr-e-Faatimi can also be given. [Islami Shadi, Pg. 144] This will also be praiseworthy. There are varying narrations as to what actually was the amount of Mahr Faatimi. Some Ulama have preferred the view of it being 400 mithqaals of silver (approximately 1750 grams) and others have preferred the view of it being 480 dirhams of silver (approximately 1470 grams).
It is allowed to give less then this amount, especially in the case of unaffordability, but it should not be less than the minimum Mahr of 10 dirhams, equivalent to 30,618g of silver.
The price of silver on Friday the 5th October 2012 was 9.685 per gram. Based on this price, the values in Rands are outlined.
