Question:
If a person (not a musāfir/traveller) is in a muṣallā at a shopping mall or airport, is he required to call the Adhān before performing Ṣalāh, or will the Adhān of a nearby masjid suffice? What if there is no nearby masjid, as is often the case at airports?
NB: there is no appointed imam or Muazzin to call out the Adhān
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-Salāmu ʿAlaykum Wa-Raḥmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh
In principle, the Adhān and Iqāmah are Sunnah when performing Ṣalāh in a muṣallā at a shopping mall or airport. If the Adhān has already been called at a nearby masjid and can be heard from the muṣallā, that Adhān will suffice, however, it is preferable to call out the Adhān at the muṣallā.
However, if there is no nearby masjid, then the Sunnah of calling the Adhān should be observed before performing Ṣalāh provided no one has called it. This would apply, for example, to an airport muṣallā where there is no nearby masjid and no Adhān can be heard.
The absence of an appointed Imām or Muazzin at the muṣallā does not affect this ruling; any suitable person may call the Adhān and Iqāmah. [1]
