Question:

ASSALAMUALAIKUM WW Is it ok to get married in Safar? Certain old people have reservations regarding safar and consider it to be evil. Is there any basis for it? Please advise

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-Salāmu ʿAlaykum Wa-Ramatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh

There is absolutely nothing wrong with getting married in the month of Ṣafar. The idea that this month brings bad luck or evil is a superstition that stems from the time of jāhiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance). The Messenger ﷺ clearly taught us not to believe in such baseless ideas.

The Messenger  said: “(There is) no ʿAdwā (no contagious disease is conveyed without Allah’s permission), nor is there any bad omen (from birds), nor is there any Hāmah, nor is there any bad omen in the month of Ṣafar, and one should run away from the leper as one runs away from a lion.” (Bukhari 5707)[1]

We can learn from this ḥadīth that the month of Ṣafar does not bring bad luck or evil of any kind. There is no month in the Islamic calendar that carries any bad omen or evil toward marriage. Therefore, marriage can take place at any time of the year without any concern of evil being linked with any month.[2]
