Question:

Sometimes parents tell their children to blow on food. Is this correct?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum Wa-Rahmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh.

There are many Sunnahs and etiquettes that we should observe while eating, such as washing both hands before and after meals, reciting the prescribed Du’as before and after meals, refraining from eating beyond satiation, not breathing into the container while drinking and etc.

Furthermore, the great Sahabi, Abdullah bin Abbas (Radiyallaho Anhuma) said:

نهى رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم – عن النفخ في الطعام والشراب

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited blowing on the food and drink”.

(Musnad Ahmad – 2818)

The prohibition against blowing on food and drinks is due to the concern that saliva from the mouth may fall into it, which should be avoided as it is against the etiquette of eating and drinking. Hence, one is preferred to avoid blowing on food and drinks. Nevertheless, if blowing is meant to cool the food, one should simply wait until it cools. [i]

Note: If blowing over the foods refers to reading Du’a against evil eye or for Barakah, then they will be no Karahah (dislike).

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
