Question

Please explain this fatwa of Mufti Mahmood Sahib Rahimahullah, as we learnt that our A’maal is closed upon death, so how can the dead make dua for us perhaps there is an explanation for this:

(Fatawa Mahmodiyya V.3,P. 358/359)
Question: Do the deceased maintain any relationship with their parents after their demise?
Answer: Yes, there remains a relationship between the living and deceased in this manner that the deceased are informed of their actions. If they carry out good actions the deceased are pleased, and if they engage in any evil then they are grieved, and the souls (of the deceased) then make Dua for the Reformation of these people. This relationship of the deceased is not only restricted to their parents rather it is with all their relatives and acquaintances.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum Wa-Rahmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh.

When a person dies, their deeds come to an end, as mentioned in the Hadith.[1] This refers to the deeds they can perform to earn reward in this world (Dunya).[2] Making Dua while in Barzakh is a separate matter, and the deceased does not earn reward for it. Therefore, there is no contradiction.[3]

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
