Question:

Can wet wipes / wet tissues be used for istinja ?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum Wa-Rahmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh.

It is permissible to use wet wipes or tissues for Istinjaa (ritual cleansing). However, it is preferable and Sunnah to also use water to ensure thorough cleanliness.

Istinjaa with only wet wipes or tissues is allowed when the impurity remains confined to the outlet. However, if the impurity has spread beyond the outlet and exceeds the size of a Dirham (a small silver coin), it is obligatory to wash it off with water.

The size of a Dirham coin is roughly equivalent to the diameter of the centre of the palm when the hand is partially clenched, measuring about 2.75 cm across and approximately 8.64 cm in circumference. In practical terms, this is similar to the size of a 5 Rand coin.

Similarly, if urine spreads to the surrounding area of the urinary opening and covers an area greater than the size of a 5 Rand coin, it becomes mandatory to cleanse the area using water.[1]

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
