Question:
Given all the conditions are fulfilled of a silver ring, can a person wear it with the niyyah of Sunnah? Also, if the answer is given that it is khilaf ul awla or that Nabi ﷺ wore it for a specific reason. Even after these reasons why wouldn’t one be rewarded for wearing a silver ring for acting upon a Sunnah?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum Wa-Rahmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh.
It is incorrect to presume that Fiqh and Sunnah are distinct. Rather, Fiqh is an understanding of Sunnah.
According to the Hanafi Madhhab, a ring is understood to be different from Nabi ﷺ’s regular attire. As in, its Sunniyat (being Sunnah) is exclusive to when its required or when one is in a prominent position where rings are used, such as being a judge, leader, grand mufti, and so on. Wearing a ring in these instances will be ittiba’-ul-Sunnah (fulfilling the sunnah).
In other instances, wearing a ring is not recognized to be Sunnah. If one adheres to the ruling suggested by Fuqahā of not wearing a ring when there is no need, he will be having more mushābahat (resemblance) with Nabi ﷺ, and his actions will be in conformance to the Sunnah.[1]
And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
