Question:

Assalamu Alaikum

Dear Sir,

In the year —-, I mediated a marriage alliance for my niece. It materialised in her marriage Alhamdulillah.

In —- severe discord began and the marriage ended in a Qula by my niece.

There were mistakes from both husband and wife which resulted in Qula, and I had no role in this discord at all.

During the difficult times, my sister on one occasion, raised her hand towards the sky and uttered a BADDDUA (curse) on me – ‘YA ALLAH LET MY BROTHER’S DAUGHTER MARRIAGE BE DESTROYED AND LET MY BROTHER LOOSE HIS PEACE OF MIND ALL HIS LIFE”

My Question: will my sister’s BADDUA have any effect on the my daughter’s marriage? My daughter’s marriage alliances are getting delayed or cancelled for some reason or the other. How to ward off any effects due to this BADDUA?

I would be grateful for your reply.

HAYYAKUMULLAH

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum Wa-Rahmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh.

In principle, it is not permissible for a Muslim to unjustly curse another person or wish harm upon anyone. The right of one Muslim over another is that they should pray for goodness and well-being, rather than invoking a curse.

However, Shari’ah permits baddua in certain situations, for example:

  1. A wronged person may make dua against an oppressor, though even in this case, forgiving the wrongdoer is better and more virtuous.
  2. It is also permissible to make dua against disbelievers, tyrants or deviant groups.

Moreover, not every curse is necessarily accepted. For example, if a person is in the right and someone unjustly curses them, then such a baddua carries no effect.

Therefore, in the inquired scenario, if you were truly not at fault nor involved in the breakdown of your niece’s marriage, then your sister’s baddua was unjustified and will not affect you or your daughter.

Your daughter’s marriage being delayed or cancelled is part of Allah’s decree. You should continue to make efforts and dua, asking Allah ﷻ to grant your daughter a righteous and suitable husband.

Difficulties in life are not necessarily signs of curse or punishment; rather, they may be a test of patience and signs of closeness to Allah ﷻ. Nabi ﷺ said:

“The people who are tested the most severely are the Prophets, then those most like them, then those most like them.” (Tirmidhi, 2398)

Whenever the thought of the baddua affects you, seek refuge in Allah ﷻ from Shaytan, as such thoughts are often his whispers meant to create fear and worry. Therefore, keep your focus on Allah ﷻ, placing full trust in him in all matters.

Finally, Allah ﷻ commands maintaining good family ties. It is advisable to maintain good ties with your sister, pray for her goodness and well-being. Occasionally send her gifts, for such actions bring peace and blessings.

May Allah ﷻ bless you and your family with goodness in this world and the Hereafter. Ameen.[1]

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
