Question:
My son passed away, i want to give sadaqah jariyah to the masjid for the renovations of the masjid, my question is, soon as i deposit the money into the masjid bank account does the sadaqah jariyah start immediately or only after renovations have been completed.
Jazakallah
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum Wa-Rahmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh.
We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of your beloved son. May Allah ﷻ forgive him, shower him with His mercy, grant him the highest stages of Jannah, and grant you and your family patience and strength. Ameen.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“إِذَا مَاتَ الْإِنْسَانُ انْقَطَعَ عَنْهُ عَمَلُهُ إِلَّا مِنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ: إِلَّا مِنْ صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ. أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ. أو ولد صالح يدعو له.”
“When a person passes away, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jāriyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who supplicates for him.” (Sahih Muslim, 1231)[1]
Donating towards the renovation of a masjid with the intention of sending the reward to your late son is indeed a commendable form of charity.
Once you donate the money with the intention of Sadaqah Jāriyah on behalf of your son, both you and your late son will receive the reward for the charity. Thereafter, when the funds are used for the renovation and people continue to benefit from the masjid, the ongoing reward (Sadaqah Jāriyah) will continue to reach your son for as long as people continue to benefit from it.[2]
May Allah ﷻ accept your contribution and make it a means of perpetual reward for your beloved son.
And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
