Question:
Assalamualaikum, Please explain the meaning of تثليث in wudhu i.e every limb should be washed thrice[to get the reward of practicing on sunnah] …what does it mean? …..Does it mean …to ensure the water reaches the required area each time fully or to make sure the water reaches the required area in total three washes ….. if water is poured once it might reach 60% of the required area due to dryness, the second wash will cover the remaining 40%.. will it be considered washing once or twice?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-Salāmu ʿAlaykum Wa-Raḥmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh
The term tathlīth (تثليث) refers to performing an action three times, in this case, washing each limb three times during wudūʾ. It is farḍ (obligatory) to wash every part of each limb once and washing it two more times is sunnah.[1] To earn the reward of the sunnah, the entire limb should be fully washed three times (استيعاب). This means each wash should cover the entire limb completely in order to count as one wash, and this process should be repeated two more times to complete tathlīth.[2]
And Allah Taʿāla Knows Best.
