To buy the black and gold beads bracelet and chain

Question

I have a question that I need to clarify. I have a friend that went to a jewellery store to buy a gift for a Muslim girl at work. She wanted to buy the black and gold beads bracelet and chain. The guy at the jewelery store indicated that Muslims could not wear this sort of chain and bracelet as it is worn usually by Hindus when they get married. Please if you can help clarify this issue for me.

Answer

Muhtaram / Muhtaramah

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.

Since we are not sure about the nature and essence of the chain and bracelet, it would be difficult to determine a ruling for it.

If the chain and bracelet refers to a “Mungal Sutr”, then it would be Makrooh-e-Tahreemi (very undersireable) to use it because it symbolizes Hinduism and is regarded as something very holy in their religion.

On the other hand, if it is something that is similar to what the Hindus use but doesn’t symbolize Hinduism, then it will be “Makrooh-e-Tanzeehi” (i.e. the undesirability will be of a lesser degree than the one mentioned above).
