Question:
I am 54 years old, (Gregorian years) Mufti Sb.
I started spotting this morning at fajr time, haven’t had a period for 2 years since im in menopause.the dr says it’s not normal to bleed in menopause after 2 years of no bleeding.
There’s nothing on the pad now, I just wanted to know what’s the ruling for salaah?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum Wa-Rahmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh.
In principle a woman is regarded as having reached menopause (Iyās) upon completing 55 lunar years (around 53 years and 4 months Gregorian year).
If she experiences bleeding after reaching this age, it will only be regarded as ḥayḍ (menstruation) if the blood is red or black, or if its colour resembles the menstrual blood she used to experience before menopause and continues for a minimum of 3 days. If the blood is yellow, green, muddy, or any other colour that does not resemble her previous menstrual blood, it will be treated as Istiḥāḍah (irregular, non-menstrual bleeding).
Moreover, if the post-menopausal bleeding that qualifies as ḥayḍ continues for between three and ten days (inclusive), the entire duration will be regarded as ḥayḍ. However, if it exceeds ten days, she will revert to her menstrual habit established before menopause; only the number of days corresponding to that previous habit will be treated as ḥayḍ, and the remaining days will be regarded as Istiḥāḍah.
If, however, the bleeding lasts for less than three days, it will be regarded as Istiḥāḍah, not ḥayḍ. Consequently, any ṣalāh omitted during those days must be made up (qaḍāʾ) [1]
Therefore, in the situation described, since the bleeding is initially irregular and its duration is unknown, it will initially be treated as Istiḥāḍah. Accordingly, she should continue performing her ṣalāh as normal. However, if the bleeding continues for three days or more (while fulfilling the conditions of ḥayḍ), it will be regarded as ḥayḍ from its onset, and no ṣalāh or qaḍāʾ will be due for those days. [2]
And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
