Tayammum in place of ghusl due to embarrassment or fear

Question:

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

I follow the Hanafi madhhab and I am currently in a state of janabah. I genuinely cannot perform ghusl tonight because I have no private room and using the only available shower would make my family aware of my situation. I cannot explain the reason to them.

I need to pray Isha, but I cannot perform ghusl without revealing this private matter to my family.

In this situation, am I permitted to perform tayammum and pray Isha? If so, what is the correct method? And what should I do about the prayers that I have missed while in janabah?

Jazakumullahu khayran.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum Wa-Rahmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh.

In the inquired scenario, mere embarrassment or fear that your family may discover that ghusl is necessary is not a valid excuse for tayammum. In that case, you must perform ghusl and offer the Esha Salaah.[1]

Any prayers missed while in the state of Janabah must be made up (Qada). Intentionally missing Salaah or delaying it from its prescribed time without a valid reason is a grave sin. Therefore, you must repent sincerely to Allah Ta’ala for missing or delaying Salaah, resolve not to repeat this, and make every effort to perform your Salaah on time.[2]

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
