Question:
Will there be Zakah on a 9 carat watch?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum Wa-Rahmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh.
If a gold watch was purchased with the definite intention of trading in it (reselling), then Zakah will be obligatory on its market value, regardless of whether the gold content is predominant or not, because it falls under the category of trade merchandise.
However, if it was not purchased for trade but for personal use, then the ruling depends on whether the gold can be extracted:
- If the gold content can be separated from the other metals by melting, then Zakah will be obligatory on the value of the pure gold content only.
- If the gold cannot be separated, then Zakah will not be obligatory on it.[1]
And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
