Question:
Assalamualaykum
Respected mufti saheb
If a woman is divorced, how will she calculate her iddat duration if she no longer gets her menses?
Please advice
Clarification
She is 60 years of age.
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-Salāmu ʿAlaykum Wa-Raḥmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh
If a woman has stop menstruating due to old age (menopause), which is at 55 lunar years (approximately 53 years and 4 months in the Gregorian calendar), and she is divorced after a marriage that necessitates the observance of ʿiddah (i.e., following consummation or valid seclusion), her ʿiddah will be three lunar months if the ṭalāq takes effect at the beginning of a lunar month. However, if the ṭalāq takes effect after the beginning of the lunar month, the ʿiddah will be completed after 90 days. In either case, the ʿiddah begins from the time the ṭalāq takes effect.
Accordingly, the woman will observe three complete lunar months or 90 days, depending on when the ṭalāq takes effect.[1]
And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
