Question

Assalaamualaikum
Question- Is there any evidence to prove that it is sunnah to pray Janaazah Salaah in the Qabrastan or is it a Custom because allot of people insist in praying in the Qabrastan?

Answer

Muhtaram / Muhtaramah

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.

The performance of salat-al-janazah in the graveyard is evident in a Hadith:

“Abu Hurayrah (RadiyAllahu Anhu) says that a black woman or young man used to clean the masjid. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) missed the person and asked about her (or him). They (the companions) said that the person died. He said, ‘Why did you not inform me?….Show me to his (or her) grave.’ So they showed him and he offered prayer for her then said, ‘These graves are filled with darkness for their occupants, but Allah Most High illuminates them by my prayer over them.'” (Sahih Muslim, Vol. 7, Dar al-Ma’rifah)

Besides the abovementioned Hadith, it is also narrated that Abu Hurayrah (RadiyAllahu Anhu) led the janazah prayers of A’isha and Umm Salmah (RadiyAllahu Anhuma) in the blessed graveyard of Jannat-al-Baqi and Ibn Umar (RadiyAllahu Anhuma) was also in the jama’ah.

Imam Abu Hanifa (Rahmatullah Alayhi) also mentions that janazah salat should be offered in the graveyard.

(Badaai’ al-Sanaai’, Vol. 2, P. 65, Rashidiyya)

(Hashiya Tahtawi ‘ala Maraqi al-Fallah, P. 595, Qadimi)
