Question
I like to buy many islamic books.is it permissable for me to sometimes when a freind wants some info on a certain subject to photocopy some things from these books and give it to her?and can you please tell me what would render a muslim out of the fold of islam .like can he say something by mistake and become a kaafir?and if so will he than have to say his kalima infront of witnesses to renew his iman.
Answer
Muhtaram / Muhtaramah
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.
1) According to our understanding of the copyright law, one cannot use the book (or copyrighted item) for any commercial gain without prior consent of the owner. However, one may use it for private use. Therefore, it would be permissible to copy few pages of such a book if it does not violate the copyright laws.
2) It is not befitting for a Muslim to even think of uttering any words of kufr. Uttering any statement of kufr intentionally leads a person to leave the fold of Islam. If one made such statements mockingly (Istihzaa) or considering it permissible (Istihlaal) or considering it to be insignificant (Istikhfaaf) then too he will leave the fold of Islam.
