Question

I was hoping you that you could please shed some light on the present day procedure for sitting in Sunnat / Nafl Ihtikaaf in Musjidun Nabawie?

I mean, there are soo many thousands of people who saved up to go for Ramadaan Umrah and so many men who would love to sit for Ihtikaaf in the Sacred Mosque but surely they cannot accommodate everyone who wants to sit in Ihtikaaf in the Musjid.

There has to be space restrictions, shower cubicles in specific nos for Fardh Ghusal? Do they have a special criteria or something? It’s not possible for authorities to accept every man who says he wants to sit for Ihtikaaf?

Answer

Muhtaram / Muhtaramah

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.

We are unaware of what the official requirements are. My personal knowledge is that the Masjid is open 24 hrs a day for the last 10 days of Ramadan. Those sitting for I’tikaaf use the communal showers and toilets, just outside the Masjid. If you plan on sitting for I’tikaaf in the Masjid, you have to make arrangements with someone to bring your meals in the Masjid. Iftaar is provided. There is no formal cubicle provided as in South Africa. There is ample place for all those intending to do I’tikaaf.

And Allah knows best

Wassalam
