Question

I would like advice as to names I can use for my baby which is due in 2 months.

Is the name Johara a suitable name?

Also I have been hearing alot of different views on whether or not I should go for scans that my doctor is prescribing, to check on the well being of the baby. What is the Islamic view point on this subject?

Answer

Muhtaram / Muhtaramah

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.

Children are a bounty from Allah. Coupled with the joy and happiness of having children are the responsibilities that lie upon the shoulders of the parents. One of the responsibilities is giving the child a beautiful name. Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “When a child is born, give it a beautiful name”.

However, it is important to know that beautiful does not mean a name with is rare and sounds extra ordinary. The name should have a good and wholesome meaning as well. The Ulama mention that names do have an affect upon a person. It is for this reason Nabi (صلى الله عليه وسلم) had changed some of the names of the Sahabah after they accepted Islam.

Rasullulah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) advised that names of Ambiyya and pious individuals be kept as the names of a person has an impact on his personality.

Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “The best names by Allah is Abdullah and Abdul Rahman”. If it is a girl we suggest Khadijah (first wife of Nabi), Zainab or Ayesha.

There are two reasons for taking a pregnancy ultrasound scan. One is for the doctors to have an idea wellbeing of the foetus as well as the positioning of the foetus.

Scans also offer information with regards to the gender of the new born. It should be borne in mind that the information given through the scan is mere speculation and cannot always be relied upon. Radiologist also informs the patient that the information cannot be guaranteed or accurate.

It is therefore advisable to be happy on the decision of Allah and concentrate on fulfilling the rights of the child and strive to groom this young blossoming tree of Islam into a fruit bearing asset for the Ummah.

And Allah knows best
