Question

Assalamualaikum.

Please give reference to the below mentioned Hadeeth.

Was-Salaaam

Dua to be read on a cold day ‫‫لَا إلٰهَ إلَّااللّٰهُ مَا أشَدَّ بَرْدَ هٰذَا الْيَومِ‫‫ ألَلّٰهُمَّ أَجِرْنِيْ مِنْ زَمْهَريْرِ جَهَنَّمْThere is no God besides Allah Ta’ala how severe is the cold of this day. O’ Allah save me from the cold of Jahannam. The cold weather of winter should remind one of the ‘burning cold’ of Jahannam. Sayyiduna ibn Abbaas (radhiyallahu anhu) says, ‘The inmates of Jahannam will ask to be rescued from the excruciating heat of Jahannam. An icy cold wind will be blown upon them, which will cause their bones to ache after which they will beg for heat again.’ Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) is reported to have said, ‘When a person recites the above dua, Allah says to Jahannam, ‘Indeed, a servant of mine has sought refuge in me from you, bear testimony that I have granted him salvation from you.’

Answer

Muhtaram / Muhtaramah

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.

This narration is recorded by the following Muhadditheen on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (R.A):

Imaams : Ibnus Sunni (‘Amalul Yawmi wall ayah Hadith 306),

Abu nu’aim in his Amalul Yawmi wal lalylah, & Baihaqi (al Asma was Sifat)

The chain of narrators is weak, (Al maqasidul hasanah, #1283) but suitable for practice.

Imam Hakim (R.A) has mentioned that is it perfectly correct to recite those du’as that are reported in weak ahadith. See: Al Mustadrak vol 1 pg. 490.

Hafidh Ibn Taymiyyah (R.A) has also stated the permissibility of reciting du’as and azhkar (plural of Zikr) that have benn reported with a weak chain. (Majmoo’ Fatawa ibn Taymiyyah, vol.18 pg.65-67)

Note: Due to lack of resources, some contemporaries have refuted the existence of a “cold spot” in Jahannam.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurarah (RA) reported that Rasulullah (S.A.W) said: “ Jahannam complained to its lord saying ;”Oh My Lord ! Parts within me have devoured each other” So Allah allowed it two breaths ; one in summer and the other in winter. Therefore the extreme heat that you experience (on earth) is caused by the heat of jahannam and the severe cold too is due to the Az-zamhareer.( the extreme cold section of jahannam)( Sahih Bukhari, hadith 537 & Sahih muslim).

The following Sahabah,Tabi’un and Ulama have affirmed this cold spot of Jahannam:

1. Abdullah bin Abbas (R.A) ( Sifatun- naar of ibn Abid-Dunya, pg.101)

2. Imaam Mujahid (R.A) (Sifatun- naar of ibn Abid – Dunya, pg.101)

3. Ikrimah (R.A) (At-takhweef minan naar, pg. 81)

4. Kaa’bul Ahbaar (R.A) (Al- hilyah of Abu Nu’aim vol.5 pg.406)

5. Imaam Abdul Malik ibn Umayr (R.A) (Sifatun- naar, pg.100)

6. Imaam Zubaid Alyaami (R.A) (At- takhweef minan- naar, pg. 81)

All of the above are (besides no.1) are Tabi’un

7. Hafiz Ibn Rajab Al-Hambaly (R.A) has a dedicated chapter on “The extreme cold of Jahannam “ in his book: At-Takweef minan-naar.pgs. 80-81

8. Allamah Aini (R.A) has stated in his commentary of Saheeh Bukhari “there is no reason to reject this “ cold spot” of Jahannam “ , He also said : “ Matters of the hereafter should not be analyzed with the experiences of this world”. (Umdatul-Qari vol.4 pg. 33)

9. Hafiz Ibn Hajar (R.A) has also mentioned a similar discussion in his commentary of Bukhari (Fathul Bari, hadith 537)

10. Mulla ‘Ali Qari (Mirqaat, hadith:591)

The list could go on, but the above ten quotations are sufficient proof for this issue.
