My family is going through a tough time right now
Question
My family is going through a tough time right now—my dad was forced into retirement, my mom is fed up with him (married 35 years) and wants to leave him, none of the kids are married, and there is high tension in the home. The biggest problem is there has always a “presence” in our home. I dunno if its a jinn or what, but we have all experienced this “presence” and its energy within the home all of our lives.
Is there any specific surah we can recite? The mental state, depression is very common in our home. Also, what steps can be taken for isthihara….we need to move since our life is not going forward in our current location….we have been here for over 35 years and our fate is not changing……please advise.
Answer
Muhtaram / Muhtaramah
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.
At the outset, you should know that Allah has made the criterion of success Jannah. That is whoever is saved from Jahannum (Hell) and is made to enter Jannah is successful. Success does not lie in acquiring the glitters of this temporary abode. Generally this is the root course for depression. When people are unable to sustain their high living standards, they become depressed and hopeless and eventually become mental (Allah forbid). The quality of a Mu’min is that, he is happy with whatever condition Allah has destined for him. He dedicates himself to Allah and abstains from all that which Allah has prohibited. If a person practices upon this, Allah guarantees a life of contentment, happiness and peace. On the contary, whoever follows his desires and ignore the Law of Allah, his life will be straightened and narrowed until it becomes difficult for him to live.
The issue of some “presence” in your home is only an excuse to attribute the problem to. Your whole family should sit down and resolve that Allah is changer of conditions and pledge to obey every command of Allah and the Sunnah of Muhammed (صلى الله عليه وسلم). If you will change your life accordingly, surely Allah will change your conditions for the better.
The only thing is to change your way of life and strive to please Almighty Allah. Resite Quran daily. Perform the five daily Salah. Make Zikr with attention and make dua.
And Allah knows best
