Question

in that case, if amil is appointed by amirul mu’minin and we don’t have amirul mu’minin at the moment, how should zakat be collected. In our country, many masajid form a commitee to get the zakat money from the people and distribute it among the needy, but at the same time, those who are involved in this committee will receive the zakat money as well. There are also private bodies who are collecting zakat money from people and distributing it to others and I believe they get some money in the name of amil. Is this practice OK?

Answer

Muhtaram / Muhtaramah

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.

It is a responsibility of every Zakaat Payer to discharge his Zakat by finding eligible recipients. These organizations are not Amils. They are the representatives of the Zakaat Payer to discharge the zakaat. Administration cost for these organizations should be borne from private donation and wellwishers. They may not take zakat money for themselves.

And Allah knows best
