What is the Sunnah way of dusting the bed before sleeping?
Can we use a our hands to dust it or it has to be something like a garment etc?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum Wa-Rahmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh.
According to the Hadith of Nabi ﷺ:
»إِذَا أَوَى أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ فَلْيَنْفُضْ فِرَاشَهُ بِدَاخِلَةِ إِزَارِهِ، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي مَا خَلَفَهُ عَلَيْهِ «
“When one of you goes to his bed, he should dust it off with the inside of his garment, for he does not know what may have come on it after he left it.”
(Sahih al-Bukhārī, 6320; Sahih Muslim, 2714)
The Sunnah is to dust the bed with a garment or cloth, not with the bare hand. Scholars explain that one of the wisdoms behind this is to protect oneself from dirt, insects, or harm, and to avoid touching anything harmful or unpleasant directly.
