Question

I am woking in company which is mutlinational and engage in business of Construction of Building, Gas Plants, Roads, Refinery etc. (www.ccc.gr)

As we all know, companies keep their money in bank with interest bearing account.

As a employee we don’t have knowledge of how much interest company has earned via interest or non shariah complaint activities.

In such case, what is status of our salary ?

I want to know because some of my muslims put this point and justified that we can take interest as we cannot escape from any where and even our salary consist of interest.

Answer

Muhtaram / Muhtaramah

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.

Generally most companies if not all, utilize interest accounts and are never free of interest monies.

In such situations the legitimacy of one’s salary will be determined considering two factors:

1. The major income of the company.

If the major income of the company is sourced via halaal avenues, then the salaries received therefrom would be permissible, otherwise not.

2. The salaries received should not be interest monies i.e. if one is certain that the actual salary given to him is interest money or a major portion of it is interest, then to accept such salary would not be permissible.

In your case, apparently it seems that the major income of your company is halaal as they are a construction company. However, we are unaware whether the salaries distributed to you are actual interest monies or not.[1]
