Question
Please can you explain the verse where Allah says: “I am as my slave thinks I am”
Answer
Muhtaram / Muhtaramah
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.
The statement “I am as my slave thinks I am” is not a verse of the Holy Qurān. This is termed as a Hadeeth-e-Qudsi. In brief, a Hadeeth-e-Qudsi is that Hadeeth in which Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) attributes the text to Allah Ta’ala.
The meaning of this Hadeeth is that if a servant is convinced that if he makes Dua and seeks forgiveness from Allah, surely Allah will answer his Dua and forgive him. Then so will it be. Allah will surely answer his Dua and forgive him.
Likewise, if we ask Allah for cure from some illness, forgiveness for some sin, protection etc. if we are convinced and sure that Allah Ta’ala has the authority and power to do as He wishes, then according to our thoughts regarding Allah, Allah Ta’ala will deal with us.
