Answer
Muhtaram / Muhtaramah
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāh wa-barakātuh.
Literally, Maria (مارية) in the Arabic language means a cow that gave birth to smooth white calf.
In history there were two famous women by the name of Maria.
1. Maria the daughter of Arkam. She was a woman amongst the Arabs who was considered to be from the noble class. The famous Arab proverb is concerning her:
خذوه ولو بقرطى مارية
Take it, even if it be in lieu for the two ponytails of Maria.
The proverb is used regarding things which cannot be missed at any price.
2. Maria al-Qibtiyya (the Coptic) – She was the slave girl of Rasulullah (Sallalahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) who gave birth to Ibrahim the son of Rasulullah (Sallalahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam). Maria was gifted to Rasulullah (Sallalahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) in the 7th Hijri by Muqayqis, the ruler of Alexandria along with her sister Sirin, a thousand mithqal of gold, 20 fine pair of clothes, a mule, and a donkey, and a slave named Ma’bur. These gifts were sent to Rasulullah (Sallalahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) with Hatib bin Abi Balta. On the way to Madina, Hatib bin Abu Balta presented the beautiful religion of Islam to the three. Maria and her sister Sirin accept Islam and M’abur remain on his religion. He accepted Islam later in Madina. Maria was a very fair and beautiful lady. Rasulullah (Sallalahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) kept Maria for himself and gave Sirin to Hassan bin Thabit from whom Abdur Rahman ibn Hassan was born.
The names of the Prophets, Sahaba, and pious predecessors are kept so that similar qualities may develop in the child. When the parents named their daughter Maria, presumably they had the intention of naming her after Maria al-Qibtiyya. She was a great Sahabiyya and the mother of the son of Rasulullah (Sallalahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam). In our opinion the name Maria is appropriate to keep.
